The Project
The goal of many small businesses looking for product photography is to create a gallery of images that they can pull from whenever a new need comes up. Jack Rabbit had an existing gallery that has been growing for years, but it was lacking some consistency between old products and new products. What they wanted was for each item to have the same number of pictures. They wanted to have both white background and lifestyle images.
The first step was to go through the gallery and create a spreadsheet of which photos were available for each item. I archived old product images that are no longer needed, to remove any duplicate images, and to organize the images. The goal was a standardized naming system and appeared in the correct order when scrolling through.
Next they mailed me all the products that needed any images taken. For this big overhaul it ended up being more than 80 toys! I started by unpacking them all – sorting them based on what photos they would need. I began by taking the white background photos. These are always the first ones that I take because there is always a small risk that in lifestyle photoshoots the product could get scuffed or boxes damages. To catch absolute perfection I take the listing photos as soon as possible.
White photos involve a white background and perfect lighting, then they are edited to have the entire background removed so that when they are listed online they are pure white. For Jack Rabbit Creations we did four to five white images of every product along with photos of the product in it’s packaging and an additional photo of the open product in front of the packaging.
After all the white background photos were captured I began working on the lifestyle images. Jack Rabbit Creations prefers outdoor images and each of the products needed a mostly unique setting. Luckily I live in beautiful Arizona and I was able to capture a variety of photos outside with flowers and greenery during October.
The Results
After editing and naming all the photos we had created a beautiful and organized gallery of images the Jack Rabbit Creations are able to pull from for their quarterly catalogs, for online listings, and for social media. They use their photos to send to retailers and on the back of their packaging. Jack Rabbit was pleased that this project was completed and that all their photos are useful and consistent.
This project was so fun for me because it had so many levels and required a lot of organization and planning. I love working with these bright toys and the lifestyle images are always a good test of creativity.
